Road tax in Cyprus: what it costs and how to renew it

Road tax depends on when your car was first registered in Cyprus. Cars registered from 2014 pay by CO2, older cars generally by engine size. You renew it online, for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.

Amount

How much road tax will I pay for my car?

The law's rate tables set your amount; the calculator below applies them. Fully electric cars pay nothing. Other cars pay at least €10 a year, unless they're exempt.

This calculator needs JavaScript. Every rate is in the table below.

Every rate, by registration date, is in the next section.

Which date counts for an import

The date the car was registered in Cyprus decides, also for a used import, whatever its first registration abroad. The fee runs from the date of registration in the Cyprus register.

How the CO2 figure is set — cars registered from December 2019

With an EC Certificate of Conformity, the figure at point 49.4 ("Combined") is divided by 1.30 and rounded down to a whole number. Where point 49.4 is empty or absent, the point 49.1 figure is used as it stands. With a registration certificate from another EU country, the "Combined" figure on it is used. If it is the point 49.4 figure, it is divided by 1.30 and rounded down. If it is the point 49.1 figure, it is used as it stands. For any other car, the law applies by analogy the 2014–2019 rules for new cars and for cars registered in another EU country.

How the CO2 figure is set — cars registered 2014 to November 2019

The figure comes from the EC Certificate of Conformity. For a car registered in another EU country without one, the figure comes from its registration document there. If it is not there, it comes from the fuel-economy guide. In other cases the RTD sets the figure.

If you disagree with the figure — cars registered 2014 to November 2019

You can lodge a reasoned written objection with the Registrar within 60 days of being notified, with supporting documents. An objection without documents counts as never lodged.

Rounding

Every amount is rounded down to a whole euro.

The RTD's CO2 lookup

The Road Transport Department has an online CO2 lookup by make and model. The law takes the figure from the car's own documents, as above.

Not covered here

This page covers private cars. Motorcycles, vans, lorries, buses and taxis have rules of their own and are not covered here.

Rates

Which rates apply to my car?

The table depends on when the car was first registered in Cyprus. From December 2019, cars generally pay by CO2, plus an amount set by their Euro emission standard. Cars registered before 2014 generally pay by engine size.

The details Every band of every table, the Euro-standard amounts and who they don't apply to, the extra rules for older cars, pre-2014 hybrids and LPG cars

From 1 December 2019: CO2 bands and the cap

The fee is the sum of each part of the CO2 figure times its coefficient. The coefficients are €0.50 per g/km up to 120 g/km, €3 above 120 and up to 150, €5 above 150 and up to 180, and €10 above 180. The amount from this table is capped at €1,500 a year.

Euro-standard amount (cars registered from December 2019)

It is added to the CO2 amount. Petrol (or dual propulsion with petrol): €0 for Euro 6 and 5b, €100 for Euro 5a, €300 for Euro 4 and earlier or no standard. Diesel (or dual propulsion with diesel): €0 for Euro 6, €50 for 5b, €250 for 5a, €600 for Euro 4 and earlier or none. The law treats some Japanese and US standards as equivalent. The amount does not apply to electric and historic cars, caravans and the other vehicles the law lists with them, taxis, and certain owners covered by the registration regulations. The standard is shown by the Certificate of Conformity, the registration certificate of the country of origin, or other documents of that country's authorities or the manufacturer.

The table the law sets for cars registered from 1 January 2014

Each part of the CO2 figure is charged at its coefficient. The coefficients are €0.50 per g/km up to 120 g/km, €3 above 120 and up to 150, €3 above 150 and up to 180, and €8 above 180. The law states no cap for this table.

Before 2014: price per cc

€0.04272 per cc up to 1,450 cc, €0.05980 above 1,450 and up to 1,650, €0.11960 above 1,650 and up to 2,050. Then €0.14523 above 2,050 and up to 2,250, €0.19649 above 2,250 and up to 2,650, and €0.19649 above 2,650. Engine capacity is the swept volume of the engine. A rotary-engine car registered before 1 January 2014 keeps paying on its nominal swept volume.

Before 2014: the rules that change the amount

A CO2 variation applies to cars registered 7 November 2006 – 31 December 2013. There is a 30% reduction up to 120 g/km, 20% above 120 and up to 165, and 10% above 165 and up to 200. Then there is a 10% increase above 200 and up to 250, and 20% above 250. The increases apply only from 1 March 2007. The CO2 figure is first rounded down to the next multiple of five, and a 15% reduction granted earlier continues. An engine-size reduction applies to cars registered in the same window that have an EC Certificate of Conformity or were classified in an EU member state. The reduction is 30% up to 1,450 cc, 25% above 1,450 and up to 1,650, and 20% above 1,650 and up to 2,050. Then it is 15% above 2,050 and up to 2,250, 10% above 2,250 and up to 2,650, and 5% above 2,650. Most cars registered before 2014 also pay a special fee. It is €12 for an engine up to 2,050 cc with CO2 up to 100 g/km. It is €22 for an engine up to 2,050 cc with CO2 above 100 g/km. It is €32 for an engine above 2,050 cc.

Transitional rules

A car imported or shipped by 9 September 2013 (the day the 2013 law was published) and not yet registered then pays the lower of the old and new calculations. The law makes this subject to the special fee. A car imported or shipped within 30 days of 1 December 2019 and not yet registered is charged under the 2014 table.

Hybrids and LPG cars registered before 2014

The notice that introduced today's engine-size table did not include these cars. For the amount, call the Road Transport Department on 22 807000.

Less or nothing

Who pays less, or nothing?

Fully electric cars pay no road tax. Hybrids and plug-ins registered from 2014 pay on their CO2, like other cars. A few groups pay less or nothing; the law gives large families and new residents no general discount.

The details Who qualifies for the disability exemption and the 63+ reduction, historic cars, other exemptions

Disability exemption

A car is exempt from road tax if its owner qualifies under the scheme of financial help for disabled persons to acquire a car (or a scheme that replaces it). The owner must also use the car, to the Registrar's satisfaction. The exemption is for one car per person. It also covers one car used to transport a minor. This applies if the minor has received, can receive or, in the Ministry's view, could have received help towards a specially adapted car. The scheme as it applied until 9 July 2026 included the exemption; the grant that replaced it from 10 July 2026 keeps the exemption.

Owners aged 63 or over

This covers a private saloon car (or light goods vehicle) that belonged to an individual on 24 November 2003, and still does. The owner must be 63 or older on the last day of each calendar year. The fee is the engine-size amount less 30%, and at most €200, for the following year. The car may be transferred to another individual and keep the same fee.

Saloons registered before 24 November 2003

The law caps the annual fee at €300. Since 1 January 2016 the cap covers all such private saloons, not only diesel ones. Whether the special fee (€12, €22 or €32) comes on top is not settled; the calculator adds it.

Historic cars

65% off the engine-size amount, and a fee of at most €300, or a licence valid only on Saturdays, Sundays and listed holidays and rally days for €25. A historic car is one whose specifications meet the FIVA technical code.

Government, diplomatic and racing vehicles

No fee is charged for vehicles belonging to the Government, a foreign state's diplomatic staff and the other persons the law names. A racing vehicle built or converted to FIA rules is exempt.

No other reductions

The fee schedule has no reduction or exemption for large families', students', pensioners' (as such) or new residents' cars; its one age-based provision is the 63+ reduction above.

If the car is unused for a while, declare it off the road instead (below).

The details The March deadline, reminders, the exceptions to cancellation, old debts

Licences ending 31 December

The 70 days end on 10 or 11 March; renewals opened on 7 January in 2026.

Reminders

The RTD sends owners no notices about the annual renewal; its online system has an opt-in SMS service whose topics include road-tax renewal.

Check the deadline every year

For 2026 only, a law moved the deadline to 31 March 2026, and the RTD said it would refund surcharges paid in the meantime.

Exceptions to cancellation

The one-year-and-70-days cancellation does not apply to a car declared off the road. It does not apply to vehicles of officers of the Republic serving abroad and of UNFICYP. It does not apply for periods when the car was lawfully in use in another country. It also does not apply for periods when it was detained by a government authority, or in a bonded warehouse with a certificate.

Unpaid road tax is a civil debt

Unpaid road tax is collected as a civil debt owed to the Republic. No licence is issued unless the fee for the period applied for is paid.

Re-registering a cancelled car

A car cancelled because no licence was obtained can be registered again. It needs a valid MOT certificate. The registration fee in force on the day must also be paid (a reduced fee if it had been declared off the road). The arrears rules still apply.

Arrears from before 2016

They can be paid in monthly instalments while renewing the current licence; the RTD and gov.cy have an "Installments payment for road tax" service.

Driving without a licence in force

It is an offence to use or drive a vehicle without a road tax licence in force.

Renew

How do I renew and pay?

For an ordinary private car, you renew online, any time of year. You need the registration number, part of the owner's reference number and a card. It's done only when the "Print Road Tax Licence" screen appears.

  1. Enter the car

The registration number, and the last three digits of the owner's reference number. You find it at point C.9 of the registration certificate.

  2. Choose the period

    3, 6, 9 or 12 months.

  3. Pay

By Visa or Mastercard, through JCCSMART. JCCSMART may ask you to register with it.

  4. Wait for the licence

The "Print Road Tax Licence" screen confirms it. If it doesn't appear, the renewal was not completed.

The details What 6 and 3 months cost, help by phone, who still pays at an office

What 6 and 3 months cost

A six-month licence costs 55% of the annual amount, a three-month licence 27.5%.

Your reference number

The number depends on who owns the car. For a Cypriot it is the identity card number, for a company the registration number, and for a non-Cypriot the passport number. For a Cyprus resident who needs a work permit it is the alien card number.

Seeing the licence again

To view a renewed licence, repeat the renewal process (the RTD's instruction).

Help by phone

The RTD call centre, 22 807000, is open Monday to Friday 07:00–17:00 all year except public holidays; it covers road-tax renewal and recalls.

If you can't renew online

In December 2025 the RTD said people who have difficulty using the internet could go to three kinds of office for the renewal. They are its district offices, Citizen Service Centres (KEP) and Citizen Centres (KEPO, in post offices). Its March 2026 notice does not repeat this. Call 22 807000 before you go.

Who still pays at an office

Some vehicles pay at the RTD's district offices or cash desks. These are embassy vehicles, large families' private buses, quarry vehicles, old vehicles with the €25 special licence and UN vehicles. Vehicles of other organisations with exemption code 04 also pay there (no access codes to the RTD system).

Refused

Why was my renewal refused?

You can only renew with a valid MOT and valid insurance. A safety recall left unfixed past its deadline suspends the MOT, and the road tax with it. If last year's road tax is unpaid, you pay that as well.

The Ministry of Transport's airbag recall list (in Greek) shows, by make, which cars are affected.

The details How recall deadlines work, who to contact

How recall deadlines work

Since February 2025 a recall procedure applies to cars. Corrective measures are due within eighteen months of the RTD being informed, or sooner on the manufacturer's instructions, or at once if the manufacturer orders immobilisation. The RTD may vary the period; once it has passed, the MOT is suspended and no new one is issued until the part is replaced. For the airbag recalls found in February 2025 the RTD set eight months; within them an affected car could still pass its MOT and renew.

Recalls are checked at the MOT

At the periodic MOT the test also checks whether the car is subject to a recall.

Recalls continue in 2026

The RTD announced further recalls in 2026 under the same procedure and recommends not using an affected vehicle until it is fixed.

Who to contact

The RTD call centre on 22 807000 and recalls@rtd.mcw.gov.cy; for Takata airbag recalls the owner contacts the manufacturer's distributor.

Off the road

What happens to road tax if the car is off the road, sold or scrapped?

A car declared off the road pays no road tax for that time. If you sell, road tax owed from before 2016 must be paid, or the buyer accepts the debt. A scrapped or exported car has to be deregistered with the RTD.

  • Off the road

No road tax while the car is declared off the road.

The declaration starts on the 1st of the month after you file it.

  • Sold

Road tax owed from before 2016 is paid first.

Or the buyer signs to accept the debt.

  • Scrapped or exported

    Apply to cancel the registration.

Tell the RTD in writing within 30 days of scrapping or export.

The details Declaring a car off the road step by step, scrapping, exporting

Declaring a car off the road, step by step

The official procedure is called immobilisation. Before the period starts, the owner gives the Registrar a notice that the car will not be used, on form ΤΟΜ 12Β. It is filed online (which needs a registered RTD account), or on paper at the RTD district offices, a KEP or a KEPO. Overdue road tax is paid first, even if the car has no valid MOT, and the instalment arrangement for pre-2016 debts continues. If the car is declared before the month its current licence ends, the road tax for the remaining months is refunded. The RTD asks owners to contact it for the forms. The owner may declare it for a set period or without end, and ends it by renewing the licence, which needs a valid MOT and insurance. A declared car's registration is not cancelled for not renewing. Using or allowing the use of a declared car is an offence. Driving it is allowed only for maintenance, repair or demonstration, under the Registrar's special permit (form ΤΟΜ 208Β). For this permit, the car must be insured and have an MOT. If a declared car is found away from the declared place or is reported being driven, the Registrar can cancel the declaration, after telling the owner in writing. The owner has 45 days to object. All road tax from its start to the date of cancellation then becomes payable.

Scrapping

The Ministry's and the RTD's announcement says the owner is released from road tax from the date the vehicle is destroyed. The RTD's cancellation page requires road tax to be paid up to and including the month in which the application is submitted. This does not apply if the car was declared off the road at a set address. The law makes the fee payable until the certificate of destruction is presented. The law requires the owner to notify the RTD in writing within 30 days of the destruction, with the certificate of destruction. Do it straight away, because until then the RTD may still charge road tax. To apply, use form ΤΟΜ 98Α at an RTD district office, a KEP or a KEPO. Submit it with a certificate of destruction from a vehicle waste treatment facility, and a written statement from any co-owner or lender. You also need Customs approval if duties and taxes were never paid.

Export

The Registrar cancels the registration once satisfied that the car has been permanently exported. Road tax stays payable by the registered owner until proof is produced. The owner notifies the Registrar in writing within 30 days of a lawful export.
